itch.io Spotlight: Cute Demon Crashers [18+]

itch.io is brimming with free-to-play visual novels, but finding a good one can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. With itch.io Spotlight I aim to uncover and share the best of them.

This week we’re looking at Cute Demon Crashers, an 18+ visual novel aimed at women where you can experience getting down and dirty with four sex demons in a safe and loving environment.

Warning: NSFW content below the cut.

Cute Demon Crashers is a very short game that basically consists of an intro, some brief interactions with the four demons, and then a sex scene with whoever you choose. You aren’t developing a romance with these characters, you’re just having a bit of fun with them, and this is reflected in the fact that the sex scene is the longest part of the game and has tons of replayability.

Each incubus or succubus has a different style, and the sex scenes have plenty of variety to them. The thing that binds them all together is the way the characters go out of their way to make sure the MC feels comfortable with what’s happening. While the constant checking up on whether or not the MC is okay and the hammering home of wanting her to feel safe and comfortable can be a bit much, that’s the theme of the game so it’s bound to be at the forefront.

Awh, sho shweet~

One of the features of the game is that you can stop the sexual scenes at any time by clicking a button in the top right-hand corner, and the demon you’re with will be totally cool with it. You know, just how most healthy sex should go. It’s a must-play for anyone who is fed up of sex scenes where the girl acts like she’s been forced into it and playing something like this made me realize just how rapey the sex in many VNs can be.

While statements from the developer, SugarScript, like “we felt there was a need of consent and safe spaces in 18+ VNs for women” and “short and silly consent-friendly and sex-positive VN” may seem like a jumble of SJW buzzwords, I would say don’t knock it just because it sounds a bit agenda-driven. The sex scenes are something you won’t see in a lot of other 18+ games; sweet, silly, realistic (or as realistic as they can be when they involve sex demons!) and overall showing sex as a fun and non-threatening activity.

There are 3 GxB sex scenes and 1 GxG.

Moving on to the overall presentation of the game, I’m amazed that this is available for free as the quality is way above a lot of the stuff we’re asked to pay for. It’s well written, clearly been through a very thorough editing process, and the system is very user-friendly and professional. You can look back on all the CGs you’ve seen so far and you get a nice little star to show you when you’ve unlocked all of a character’s artwork.

Another thing I noticed was that you’ll get slightly different dialogue depending on where you stop the sexy times, and depending on whether you have chosen to remove particular items of clothing or not. Seeing your choices having an effect on the dialogue, images, and outcome is what makes visual novels such a fun medium to engage with, and the level of attention to these details shown in Cute Demon Crashers could put some commercial developers to shame.

The four gorgeous sexy demons you can choose from. I went for Mirari first, because boobs.

The artwork is gorgeous and there are lots of CGs to collect despite the short length. Colours are vibrant, backgrounds aren’t neglected, the character designs are detailed, and the sprites display a wide variety of expressions. There are also little bits of voice acting to bring the characters to life. The dialogue isn’t fully voiced, but there will often be a sound effect or voiced phrase at the beginning of most lines. It’s something I haven’t seen done before, but I liked the effect.

Cuuuute~

SugarScript wrote that their keywords were “Cute, Silly, Super-Short, Safe and Vanilla” and the game they’ve produced definitely hits all these notes. It’s a really high-quality visual novel, and even if you’re not sold on its themes of consent and “safe” explorations of sexuality, I can’t see any reason not to at least give it a try. Personally I was way more impressed than I expected to be, and I really hope to see more from these devs in the future; I’d happily pay for their next title.
